City’s western suburbs to turn greener

CHENNAI: Suburbs on the western fringes of Chennai will soon sport a greener look with development of parks and planting of avenue tree saplings gaining priority among civic works.
Of the 21 new parks proposed in the Ambattur Municipality, including Mogappair, Ambattur and Anna Nagar, four were opened recently. A Municipality official said the local body had allotted Rs.1.50 crore for the parks, which would have play area for children and walkers’ path.
The Municipality planned to improve facilities in parks at Vijayalakshmipuram and Krishnapuram. It would soon float tenders to develop 12 parks in many areas, including Periyar Nagar at Korattur. The scheme would include a park spread over four acres on Pari Salai in Mogappair East.
For five parks on Pattinathar Salai, Kannadasan Street at Mogappair and Anna Nagar Western Extension, the Municipality will place work orders soon, the official said.
The local body at Maduravoyal is also gearing up to inaugurate a park in Pallavan Nagar, developed at a cost of Rs.5 lakh, in a few days. Another park in Metro Nagar will be opened next month.
Similar ventures are being planned at Avadi and Valasarvakkam as part of the beautification drive.
Following the Forest Department’s drive to provide green cover to the city and its suburbs, local bodies in the western suburbs have been instructed to obtain tree guards as a preliminary measure for planting avenue tree saplings.
While the local bodies at Ambattur and Avadi have been asked to obtain 500 tree guards each, the civic body at Maduravoyal will procure 100 tree guards.
Officials at the Ambattur Municipality said the work pertaining to sapling planting would begin by the first week of October.
