Plea to introduce Tamil as court language

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: A public interest litigation petition has been filed before the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court seeking a direction to the Central and State Governments to introduce Tamil as the official language of the High Court.

A Division Bench, comprising judges Prafulla Kumar Misra and P.R. Shivakumar, on Friday directed the Central and State Government counsels to take notice and adjourned the matter to October 12.

The petitioner, Commonwealth Advocates’ Association of India, said that the Legislative Assembly passed a resolution recently to introduce Tamil as the official court language. It was announced that the resolution was sent for the approval to the President.

The petitioner’s association claimed that it wrote to the President on May 29, 2007, seeking to expedite the process of declaring Tamil as the official language of the High Court.
