CID summons police officers in Rehman case

Kolkata: Two senior police officers were summoned on Saturday by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in connection with the mysterious death of 30-year-old computer graphics teacher Rizwanur Rehman.

The CID is investigating the death of Rehman whose body was found alongside a railway track near here on September 21.

Deputy Commissioner (Detective Department)-I Ajay Kumar and Deputy Commissioner (Headquarters) Gyanwant Singh, both Indian Police Service officers, remained with the CID for more than four hours.

The alleged role played by senior police officials in the death of Rehman, who had married the daughter of an influential city businessman reportedly against her father’s wishes, has increasingly come under the scanner.

Left Front Committee Chairman Biman Bose said that no police official would be spared if it was proved he had a role.

On Friday, the veteran Marxist leader, Jyoti Basu, had criticised the Kolkata Police Commissioner’s statement to the media on September 23, describing it as “unwarranted and very bad.”

West Bengal Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray had earlier said that steps would be taken against senior police officers if required.

The CID has already submitted an interim report while its final report is expected within a month. Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had also ordered a judicial probe into the incident apart from the CID inquiry.
