Youths to be trained for ancillary units

Tiruchi units facing skilled manpower shortage

Men and women will be eligible

TIRUCHI: With Tiruchi ancillary units facing skilled manpower shortage, the district administration has planned to train unemployed youths in specific trades and place them to meet the industry requirements.

The initiative will be part of the Youth Skill Development Training Programme of Tamil Nadu Women’s Development Corporation (TNWDC). Both men and women will be eligible to undergo the short-term training programmes in consultation with industry organisations like Confederation of Indian Industry.

Assessment

“We are already in the process of assessing the industry requirements, especially the ancillary units engaged in the manufacture of power equipment. We are also planning to talk to the BHEL and educational institutions so that the training could be arranged through them,” Collector Ashish Vachhani told The Hindu.

The initiative was taken in view of shortage of welders, fitters and machinists.

The TNWDC had started the training programme last year.

The administration has planned to enlarge its scope this year to meet the industry expectations. The TNWDC has identified trades like Fork-Lift/JCB/Crane Operation, welding, CNC lathe operation, computer hardware, electrical and electronics, home appliances and mobile phone servicing, catering technology and imitation jewellery making.

The training is to be provided through Seshasayee Institute of Technology, Tiruchi Regional Engineering College Science and Technology Entrepreneurs’ Park, State Institute of Hotel Management and Catering, Tiruchi District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, said R.Vasanthi, Project Officer, TNWDC, Tiruchi.

The maximum duration would be six months.

About 125 youth in the age group of 18 to 35 from below poverty line families would be trained this year.

The number could be raised depending on the demand, Mrs.Vasanthi said.

Stipend

The trainees would be given stipend. Last year, the TNWDC had trained about 165 persons of which nearly 85 have been employed.

This year, St. Joseph’s College and National College have come forward to offer courses on clinical lab technician, computer applications, herbal products and gem cutting, she added.
