Six sentenced for stealing power

NEW DELHI: In five separate cases, six persons, including owner of a jeans washing and dyeing unit, have been sentenced to imprisonment for stealing power. BSES enforcement teams recently nabbed these people for stealing electricity between 9 kW and 38 kW in East and Central Delhi.

Though three of the six accused were granted bail till the next hearing of their respective cases by the special court, they were directed to pay bail amounts ranging between Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 1 lakh after being in jail for a few days.

“Two persons including the owner of a jeans washing and dyeing unit who were stealing 14 kW of electricity were sentenced to jail for 14 days. Earlier a BSES enforcement raid, accompanied by CISF and Delhi police personnel, had caught Ajay and Jaggan stealing over 14 kW of power. While Ajay, owner of the jeans washing and dyeing unit in Seelampur, was charged with direct theft of electricity, Jaggan, his accomplice, on the other hand, was charged with abetment of power theft,” said a BSES spokesperson.

Sanjay alias Sanjeev, a resident of Gandhi Nagar, was caught stealing 10.6 kW of power and also sentenced to jail for 14 days. He was earlier caught stealing 10.6 kW of electricity for commercial purposes and no electricity meter was found at the premises.

In another case, Ismail, a resident of Chauhan Bazar, was caught stealing 38 kW power and granted bail only after paying Rs.1 lakh as bail amount. The accused went into hiding and continued to evade arrest, but when the special court issued orders for attachment of his property, he surrendered.

A resident of Gujjar Mohalla, Virender was also caught stealing electricity, arrested and produced before the special court. He was granted bail after paying Rs.75,000.

The BSES enforcement team also caught the owner of an iron steam plant stealing 14 kW of power. Ram Avtar, a resident of Seelampur, was caught stealing 14 kW of electricity for running an iron steam plant.
