Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Thursday set aside an order passed by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai imposing a penalty for octroi evasion on actor Sushmita Sen with regard to her Toyota Land Cruiser. A Division Bench consisting of Justices Swatanter Kumar and Dhananjay Chandrachud issued a show cause notice to Ms. Sen and one Vasu Thamalla as to why authorities should not be directed to take action against them. “No doubt the conduct of the petitioner [Ms. Sen] is blameworthy...She had altered her stand as per convenience,” the court noted. As a result, as of now Ms. Sen will not have to pay penalty of Rs. 23,86,868 as demanded by the MCGM, but she will have to file a reply to the showcause notice in six weeks. — PTI © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
