Welcome decision

The recent Supreme Court judgment that anybody can help the injured in a road accident or in assault to get admitted into hospital and that it is the responsibility of the hospital to provide first aid and inform the police should be welcomed.

Whither progress

Outdated epics, superstitions, religions and castes are the biggest hurdles in national development. With a human resource of 100 crore we could be the supreme world power. But what is the reality? Commotion in Parliament, bomb blasts, quarrels on Ramar Sethu, Cauvery River, Mulla Periyar dam, economic zones, Salem Railway Division, Babri Masjid, Ramjanma Bhoomi and what not. Sensible reforms should take place in the administrative set-up if we have to take the great leap towards development.

I have a few suggestions. The country may be divided into equal districts i.e. uniform tax, language, education etc.

President may be elected by eligible voters through electronic voting machines. There should be no politics, no religion, no self-aggrandisement, no regionalism. Retirement age of government employees should be brought down to 55. This will remove unemployment. Caste, religion, illiteracy, child labour, prostitution and poverty should be eliminated. Strikes, processions, festivals, racing, gambling etc. should be banned.

Family cards

Everyday we read about huge quantities of ration rice meant for public distribution being smuggled out. There are many fake ration cards in circulation. Authorities close their eyes on criminals, but harass honest citizens who are in need of ration cards. Gas suppliers insist on the ration card for gas supply. It is relatively easy to get a passport but it takes a very long time to get a ration card in an honest way, if at all you get it. The government should look into the problem and end corrupt practices of its staff.

Bus route

Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Salem division, bus from Namakkal to Chennai route goes via Salem and Attur instead of going via Thuraiyur and Perambalur. This inconveniences passengers because of the long journey and also results in delay in reaching Chennai. Transport authorities should look into this.

Cable menace

Cutting of roads in Salem for laying cables by private telecommunication companies continues unhindered (October 4). Road laying works in many places are left incomplete leading to inconvenience to the public. The road work which began in Vijayaraghava Nagar, near Sona College, six months ago has gone waste. Will municipal councillors, instead of quarrelling in the Corporation over flimsy issues, look into the serious problems of the citizens?

Door numbers

The co-existence of old and new numbers for houses all over the state causes confusion to postmen, courier messengers and others. Letters are delivered at wrong places and some are not delivered at all. It is a pity that local bodies have not yet felt it necessary to rationalise the numbers. Old numbers should be removed from doors and records and new numbers should be made mandatory.

Power cut

On October 9, 2007 the Electricity Board was rather unkind to numerous consumers in R.S. Puram and Saibaba Mission areas. Throughout the day there were power cuts at frequent intervals causing inconvenience to residents and businessmen in these localities. An old man got trapped in the lift in Tirumal Apartment (off Thadagam Road) and a few electronic appliances suffered damage. On October 10 too power went off twice. Navarathri festival is about to commence. One does not know what is in store for the residents.

Privatise power supply

We have been experiencing intermittent and unscheduled power cuts exceeding 15 hours in 24 hours since October 7! We wonder what has gone wrong with our poorly-managed Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB). There must be a public relations officer for TNEB and so far he has not bothered to tell us through newspapers what the problem is. People take these things lying down. Privatisation will help reduce such incidents. In Ahmedabad city, Torrent group is maintaining power supply. There is neither voltage drop and nor power failure there.

Train service

With no signs of the launch of the proposed Coimbatore-Nagercoil overnight express, woes of migrant people from the southern districts working in Coimbatore and Tirupur regions will increase during the Dussera/Deepavali season.

There will be a heavy holiday rush from Coimbatore/Tirupur to the southern districts during Deepavali and people will have to depend only on the Coimbatore- Nagercoil day time passenger.

Will the Southern Railway start the announced 6609/10 Coimbatore-Nagercoil daily express train before Deepavali?
