Lanka veterans to play in Kochi

KOCHI: A Sri Lankan veterans team, the ‘Lanka Cavaliers’, will play three matches against Kerala and Ernakulam veterans teams here from Monday.

The touring team has many quality cricketers, including former Sri Lankan Test player Bandula Warnapura who is also the Director, Cricket Operations of the Sri Lanka Cricket Board.

The Kerala and Ernakulam teams include former Ranji players P. Balachandran, S. Ramesh, K. Mohan, J.K. Mahendra, O.K. Ramdas, T. Shivadas, Thomas Mathew, Narayan Kutty, Ranjith Thomas, K.P. Satish and T.C. Sudheesh.

Matches: Oct. 15: Lanka Cavaliers v Ernakulam Veterans (Nehru Stadium, Twenty20, 1.30 p.m.). Oct. 16: Lanka v Kerala Veterans ‘A’ (Tripunithura Palace Oval, 40-over game, 10 a.m.). Oct. 17: Lanka v Kerala Veterans ‘B’ (Tripunithura Palace Oval, 40-over game, 10 a.m.

Naseef scalps five

Left-arm spinner Mohammed Naseef took five wickets as North bundled out South for 168 runs in its second innings in the Kerala State under-19 inter-zone meet at the Nehru Stadium, Kochi, on Sunday. The three-day match ended in a draw but South gained two points for its six-run first innings lead.

The scores: South 214 and 168 in 72 overs (Ali Asgar 66, Nimish Lathif 37, Mohammed Naseef five for 34, Yashin Johar three for 41) drew with North 208 and 86 for two (N.K. Arjun 46).

Jagadeesh hits 195

South Zone’s V.A. Jagadeesh, who scored an unbeaten 152 on Saturday, missed his double century by five runs in the Jacob Trophy Kerala State senior inter-zone cricket championship at the Fort Ground, Palakkad, on Sunday.

None of the others in the team reached fifty but South finished its first innings at 347 in reply to North’s 284. South medium-pacer Sony Cheruvathur was also in fine form, scalping four in North’s second innings for 16 runs. The three-day match ended in a draw.

The scores: North 284 & 160 for five in 63 overs (P.K. Prajeesh 82, Vilas N. Kutty 53, Sony Cheruvathur four for 16) vs. South 347 in 104.3 overs (V. Suresh 39, V.A. Jagadeesh 195).
