No scope for third alternative now: CPI(M)

Staff Reporter

VIJAYAWADA: The Andhra Pradesh State unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Sunday virtually saw no scope for a third alternative, at least in the immediate future.

The change in the CPI (M)’s stand assumes significance, as the party had just a month ago ridiculed TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu for ruling out such a possibility.

At that time the party’s State secretary B.V. Raghavulu had said that there was scope for such an alternative political formation as long as the Congress and TDP continued with the economic policies which affect the poor. The CPI (M) is believed to have even had parleys with popular film star Chiranjeevi in an attempt to forge such an alternative.

‘No resourcefulness’

“At present, there is no scope for third alternative. We don’t find resourcefulness in any of the political parties to form third alternative,” Mr. Raghavulu said. When asked whether the TDP was moving closer to his party, he said, “The bourgeoisie parties cannot come close to us.” The promises spree by both the Congress and the TDP was an attempt to either retain power or come back to power, he said.

Replying to a question, Mr. Raghavulu favoured inquiry by a sitting judge into the properties of Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy and that of Mr. Naidu.

The court should decide whether it could spare a sitting judge to inquire into the allegations. The Government should prove its sincerity by constituting inquiry by a sitting judge, he said.

Mr. Raghavulu said that proposed commission should inquire into the properties of all the sitting MLAs. Meanwhile, Speaker K.R. Suresh Reddy should disclose the details of the assets declared by each MLA to the public, he said.

Replying to another question, Mr. Raghavulu dubbed the Indiramma Sambaralu as ‘Indiramma Dambikalu’ (ostentation) of the ruling party. Almost all the houses were allotted to Congress party workers.
