STERN ACTION: Protesting students being removed at Presidency College on Monday. CHENNAI: Six students of Presidency College were injured when the police resorted to lathi-charge to chase away a group of students who allegedly threw stones and damaged window panes and other college property on Monday. The police said some students had demanded that the college management take steps for immediate release of two students arrested on Friday on charges of assaulting a student of Pachaiyappa’s College in an MTC bus. Slogans raisedWhen there was no response, they assembled inside the campus and started raising slogans. A few students threw stones, damaging the window panes. When they tried to go to the road, college authorities informed the police. A police team led by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Triplicane) M. Ramasubramani arrived on the spot and urged the students to disperse. The latter allegedly threw stones at the police party. The police resorted to lathi-charge. In the melee, six students and two policemen were injured. They have been admitted to hospital. Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) P. Balasubramanian told reporters that when the students tried to come to the road, the police resisted their move. A few members of the public were also injured in the stone throwing.
