Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Welcome

The Tamil Nadu government’s order banning the use of mobile phones in schools under its purview is welcome. It deserves praise from parents in particular. It is sure to instil discipline and enable students to concentrate better on studies.

It may also be noted that the incidence of mobile phone use by teachers in the midst of taking classes is also on the rise, especially in government schools. It will be good if some restriction is imposed on the use of mobile phone by teachers too (such as making it compulsory for them to switch off the phones during class hours). It will have a salutary impact on the quality of teaching and student behaviour.

V.K. Balakrishnan,

Chennai

The decision is a step in the right direction and should be welcomed by all. There is no gainsaying that the attention of students gets diverted when they are allowed to carry mobile phones to schools. They are an avoidable distraction for teachers as well.
