Pakistan blasts

If the tumultuous homecoming of the former Pakistan Prime Minister and PPP leader, Benazir Bhutto, raised hopes that democracy could be restored soon, the brutal reality became evident hours after her arrival.

The terrorist attack on the cavalcade heralding Ms Bhutto’s return that claimed almost 140 lives and injured several others is testimony to the fact that the people of Pakistan are merely chasing a mirage at the moment. Many theories are bound to float about the perpetrators of the dastardly crime and the needle of suspicion is sure to point at the Taliban-Al-Qaeda nexus.

The blasts are an indicator of the things to come. It is obvious that Ms Bhutto’s deal with President Pervez Musharraf has not gone down well with the extremist elements and they welcomed her homecoming with death and destruction.

The explosions also show that the present government has lost its grip over law and order.

Pakistan’s support to the U.S. in the war against terror is reportedly the reason behind the dastardly attacks.

Umpteen such instances have occurred in Pakistan but, sadly, no lesson has been learnt. Pakistan should renounce terrorism once and for all in letter and in spirit.

Such an action will have a global impact and serve to open the eyes of other countries entertaining fundamentalist forces.

The explosions are against the democratic aspirations of the people of Pakistan. The people and the government should continue the fight against terror.

The entire world should condemn this barbaric killing of innocent people.
