Sahgal-Jindal wins Baroda Cup

NEW DELHI: Dhruvpal Godara and Simran Shergill struck vital goals in the final minutes of the match as the combined team of Sahgal Stud-Jindals defeated Cavalry Green 9 1/2-7 to win the Baroda Cup 12-goal polo tournament on Sunday.

The teams started the final chukker at 6 1/2-6 in Sahgal-Jindal’s favour when Argentine Santoago de Estrada fired his sixth goal to put Cavalry ahead. Briton Kelvin Johnson brought in the equaliser before Godara slotted in. Shergill then chanced on a loose ball for the winning goal.

Shergill and Johnson scored twice as Sahgal Stud-Jindal emerged worthy winners. Navjit Sandhu was the other scorer for Cavalry.

Love Anmol and Amardeep Singh struck five goals apiece as Mata Gujri Public School (Jalalabad, Ferozepur) thrashed Motilal Nehru School of Sports (Rai) 16-0 in a league match of the 25th Nehru sub-junior boys’ hockey tournament here on Saturday.

Parvinder Singh scored four, while Ravi Kumar and Pawandeep Singh were the other scorers for Mata Gujri School.

Other results: Government Co-ed Senior Secondary School (Singhu, Delhi) 4 (Deepak 3, Ranbir) drew with Sadul Sports School (Bikaner) 4 (Chhota Ram, Charitra Singh Bishnoi 3).
