Synthetic turf for Madurai

Madurai: “Madurai will soon have a synthetic turf for hockey,” Mr. Atulya Misra, member secretary, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu said, while inaugurating the Special Development Centre for Hockey here on Saturday.

Madurai has produced many players like Raja, Sivabalan, Radhakrishnan, Kalidas and Mohan Kumar.

The special development centre will help produce more such players.

Mr. K. Jothikumaran, secretary general, IHF, who distributed kits to the selected players said “It is my wish that the kiddies tournament in Madurai be revived and for that Mr. Soundararajan and Mr. Venugopal will form a committee and I will also be helpful.”

Afran downs Monica

Afran Banu of Crescent School beat Monica Jain of Lakshmi School 13-9 to enter the girls’ under-18 semifinals in the district-level Golden Jubilee carrom tournament at Madurai on Saturday.

The results (quarterfinals): girls: u-18: Beneeta bt Booja Jain 22-0; Udaya bt Praveena 14-9; Afran Banu bt Monica Jain 13-9; Aarthi bt Fatima Sahnes 7-6; u-14: Kanagadevi bt Lakshmi Priya 24-0; Shaheen Bam bt Veera Jothi 13-8; Sowya Begum bt Lakshmi Priya 12-11; Adulya bt Ramya 7-5.

St. Paul’s triumphs

St. Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Salem defeated host Kodai International School ‘A’ 59-40 in the final of the inter-school basketball tournament at Kodaikanal on Saturday.

The results: final: St. Paul’s, Salem 59 (Srinivasan 24, Raguram 19) bt Kodai International ‘A’ 40 (Sherrad 14, Norbu 10). Third place: MSP Solai Nadar, Dindigul 60 (Madhavan 14, Saranraj 12, Karthikeyan 11) bt American College, Madurai 38 (Velmurugan 15, Karuppasamy 13).

Semifinals: KIS ‘A’ 49 (Sherrad 12, Norbu 11) bt American College 27; St. Paul’s 50 (Raguram 13, Srinivasan 13) bt MSP Solai Nadar 31 (Jeganraj 10).

Aditi in line for a double

Aditi Anand of Stanes AIHSS chalked out a 21-19, 21-16 win over Rashmi Babu of Little Flower to enter the under-13 girls’ singles final of the district schools badminton tournament at the DéjÀ vu Club courts at Coimbatore on Saturday.

In the final, Aditi will lock horns with Arpita S. Lulla (SBOA), who got the better of Sneha Kamath (Stanes) 21-11, 21-16.

Earlier, Aditi, partnering schoolmate Sadhana, ousted Nikita S. Kamath and Shibani from Stanes 21-13, 21-11 for a place in the doubles final.

Postponed

The NDFA-Sterling Biotech first division football league, organised by the Nilgiris District Football Association, at the HADP Open Air Stadium at Udhagamandalam has been postponed till October 31.
