Police official injured

BERHAMPUR: A police officer was seriously injured when an angry mob attacked a police team during their raid on an illegal gambling den operating near Gatebazar area of the city on Friday night.

The injured sub-inspector, Surendra Kumar Bhol, was admitted to the MKCG medical college hospital for treatment. Five platoons of armed police were deployed in the area. Armed policemen resorted to flag march in the area to bring the situation under control.

The incident occurred around midnight. Receiving information about a gambling den operating at Jayamanagal Nagar near Gatebazar area, a police team reached the spot to raid the den. But they were opposed by the localities of the area. To check entry of police team to their area they started pelting stones at the police team. One of these stones hit Mr Bhol on the head and injured him. Receiving information about this, Berhampur Superintendent of Police Nitinjeet Singh rushed to the spot with extra force. He ordered a flag march in the area.

On Saturday the senior citizens ofJayamangal Nagar sat together to bring peace so that their area would not have to face house-to-house by police to nab the culprits behind the illegal gambling den. The president of Berhampur Hadikula Mahasangha, Sukant Mukhi and president of city sweepers’ association, Anil Nayak mediated at this meeting.
