Water level at 136 ft at Mullaperiyar

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Water level in the Mullaperiyar reservoir touched 136 feet, the maximum level stipulated by the Central Water Commission, on Monday night and started overflowing into the Kerala side to the Idukki reservoir.

The overflow started on Monday afternoon and by evening, three of the 13 shutters of the spillway were overflowing.

The district authorities issued the third warning to those living on the banks of the Periyar since there were chances of the water level rising as the overflow intensified in the coming days.

As per official sources, the flow into the reservoir on Monday was 2,282 cusecs (cubic feet per second) and the discharge into the Tamil Nadu side, 1,716 cusecs.

Control rooms

The round-the-clock control rooms functioning at the district headquarters and Peerumade taluk office are monitoring the situation.

The authorities have readied four rehabilitation centres for those living on the Vallakkadavu-Vandiperiyar stretch in case they are moved out of their houses.
