NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party has written to the Election Commission on Thursday objecting to a proposal of the Himachal Pradesh government to privatise 11 hydro-power projects. The letter notes that the State government has written to the Commission asking for its permission to go ahead with the proposal. Since the model code of conduct is in force in view of the Assembly elections, this request should be turned down, the party demanded. The party referred to an observation of the Supreme Court in the Ghasi Ram versus Dal Singh case of 1968 that “to arrange to spend money on the eve of elections, although for the general good, is an evil practice.” It requested the Commission to order the State government to freeze the proposal till the election process was completed. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
