CHENNAI: Ariyalur district will soon be created and a function held to mark its inauguration, the State Government announced on Friday. An official release said the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government, after assumption of office last year, took steps to establish the new district but the process had to be suspended in view of a delimitation exercise. As it had been completed, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi ordered resumption of the process last month. After returning from his tour of Ramanathapuram, Madurai and Salem, he sanctioned the required logistics and infrastructure. Recalling that in December 1999 the then DMK regime decided to form the Ariyalur district and appointed a special officer, the release added that the AIADMK regime, which came to power subsequently, cancelled the decision. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
