ASC to clash with KSP in final

BANGALORE: Army Service Corps and Karnataka State Police set up a clash for the title in the BEL Sports Club hockey tournament for the Kodava Cup here with hard fought victories in the semifinals played here on Tuesday.

Karnataka State Police edged out Madras Engineering Group ‘B’ 3-2 with Mohan Kumar (20th min) scoring off a penalty stroke. Pradeep (38th) and Magesh (56th) also netted goals for KSP.

Dinesh Tirkey (fourth) scored off a penalty corner and Stephen D’Souza (22nd) added to the tally for MEG ‘B’.

In the second semifinal, Army Service Corps beat Maharatta Light Infantry 5-4. Harpreet Singh (12th and 68th), K.P. Deepu (21st and 54th) and Sanjay Tete (26th) slotted goals for the winner.

Sunil Kumar (12th), Praful Kumar (23rd and 48th) and Irfan Sanadi (46th) scored for MLI.

The final is slated for 3.30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Nihal hits century

Nihal Unni’s 101 set the base for Bangalore City XI’s 66-run victory over President’s XI in a KSCA under-17 inter-district tournament match here on Tuesday.

Bangalore City XI scored 234 for five in 50 overs and bowled out President’s XI for 168 in 48.5 overs.

Combined City XI 121 in 32.2 overs (Bharat Jain 63) lost to Secretary’s XI 122 for five in 47.4 overs.

BEL beats BSNL

Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) brushed aside the challenge from BSNL in just under an hour at 25-22, 26-24, 25-14 in a State ‘A’ Division volleyball league encounter here on Tuesday.

With this win the BEL kept itself in with a chance of finishing amongst the top eight. The top eight in this league will figure in the Association Cup Volleyball tournament top be played from November 19 to 24 at the Sree Kanteerava stadium courts.

Karnataka State Police (KSP) and MEG remained unbeaten. While the State Cops downed Sports Hostel in four sets at 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 25-13 the Sappers were taken to the distance by BSNL before prevailing 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 24-26, 15-11.

On Monday, SAI downed Jindal Steel Works, Bellary 25-19, 26-28, 25-18, 25-13.

CIL draws with ADE

CIL and ADE split two goals and points as Super Division football league resumed at the football stadium here on Tuesday.

Pradeep scored for CIL in the 13th minute while Gnanaprakash netted the equaliser in the 52nd for ADE. With this split in points CIL has tallied six points from 10 matches while ADE has seven points from nine encounters.

Earlier, Reserve Bank downed Sri Gajanana by an odd goal in three in an A Division league match. All the goals came in the last quarter of the match. Chinnappa (70th) and M.A. Ponappa (77th) got the goals for the bankmen before Chandrashekar (83rd) reduced the margin for Sri Gajanana.

Sohail posts win

Sohail Jairaj scored a narrow 381-354 win over V.K. Sadarangani as the billiards second leg of the State ranking tournament got underway at the KSBA hall here on Tuesday.

Daniel dazzles

At Mangalore, left-arm spinner and opening batsman Daniel Sequeira (66, 5x4, and four for 18, including a hat-trick) was the star in St. Aloysius Pre-University College’s 142-run win over Sri Dharmasthala Manjunateshwara PU College (Ujire) in the second semifinals of Ultra-Tech Cup cricket tournament here on Tuesday.

Right arm medium pacer Hariprasad picked up five for 30.

St. Aloysius will now clash with Canara PU College in the finals to be played on Thursday.

The scores: St. Aloysius 200 for 9 in 35 overs (Daniel Sequeira 66) bt SDM 58 in 11.4 overs (Hariprasad five for 30, Sequeira four for 18).

ASC registers win

ASC defeated Beagles BC 55-42 in a State ‘A’ division basketball league match at Bangalore. Harish (12) excelled for ASC, which led 26-23 at the break.

Other result: KSP 78 (Mahesh 27) bt HASC 64 (Umashankar 15, Sachindra 14, Girish 10).

State-level chess

South Kanara District Chess Association is organising a three-day State-level under-13 chess championship for boys and girls at Karnataka Bank Employee’s Auditorium, Bejai, Mangalore from November 16.

Players born on or after January 1, 1994 are eligible to participate and entry closes on November 13. Interested may contact SKDCA on phone nos: 98459-48625 / 98450-32598.

Entries should be sent through the district chess associations or United Karnataka Chess Association. The top five players in each category will represent the State in the national championships to be held at New Delhi from December 14 to 22.

Karnataka triumphs

At Mangalore, host Karnataka scored a facile five-wicket win over Tamil Nadu in the finals of the Employees’ Provident Fund South Zone cricket tournament played here on Tuesday.

The scores: Tamil Nadu 91 for nine in 30 overs (S.J. Srinath three for 9) lost to Karnataka 92 for five in 20.2 overs (S. Raju 41, Srikumar 33, Ravikumar three for 0).

Merchants wins

Merchants FC (Mangalore) scored a comfortable 2-0 win against United FC (Uchil) in the Ahmad Master B division football league tie played at the Nehru Maidan, Mangalore, on Tuesday.

Parashar and Prashanth scored in the 14th and 17th minutes of the second half to set up a win for Merchants after both teams were goalless at the breather.

There are no fixtures scheduled on Wednesday. Mangalore Heros will take on Mukkacherri Arts and Sports Club (Ullal) on Thursday.
