VERIFICATION: Mayor M. Subramanian checking the blueprint of the over 30-acre land belonging to the Chennai Corporation in Madambakkam on Saturday. TAMBARAM: Chennai Mayor M. Subramanian on Saturday visited Madambakkam, near Tambaram, and inspected a 30.24-acre site belonging to the Chennai Corporation. The land is located in Maruthi Nagar, Madambakkam Town Panchayat. It was donated to the Corporation by way of a gift deed by philanthropist Annamalai Chettiar some years ago, officials of the Revenue Department of Tambaram Taluk told reporters during the Mayor’s visit. The philanthropist had donated the land to the Chennai Corporation for the purpose of building a hospital-cum-rehabilitation centre for the leprosy affected. As several residential localities mushroomed around the land over the years, the proposal was dropped, officials said. Mr.Subramanian said during the previous Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) regime, a proposal was mooted to develop 560 housing plots at the site for the Chennai Corporation workforce. There were more than a dozen encroachments on the site and they were removed, he said, adding that priority was to protect and fence the entire property. “We will discuss with the State Government the next course of action before taking a final decision on how the property would be developed,” Mr. Subramanian said. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
