What is hot tap method?

MANGALORE: Salvage experts, who are in Mangalore to retrieve oil from Den Den, have decided to adopt “hot-tap” method.

This involves using equipment to remove hydro carbonaceous fluid in the interior of the ship by drilling an aperture while employing cooling by cyclic drilling and/or refrigeration.

According to sources here, care is taken to ensure that the drilling is carried out in a manner such that the temperature of the drill and material being drilled do not exceed a target temperature that is derived from the decomposition temperature of the material being drilled.
