“CPI(M) action may precipitate matters”

Basu urged to take initiative for all-party peace meet

Forward Bloc expresses concern over

violence in Nandigram

“The entire State is heading towards chaos”

Kolkata: Another Left Front partner, Forward Bloc, on Saturday expressed outrage over the violence in Nandigram and urged veteran Marxist leader Jyoti Basu to take the initiative for an all-party peace meeting to restore normality and find a permanent solution to the problem.

Forward Bloc state general secretary Ashok Ghosh sharply criticised the CPI(M) and the state administration for ‘the efforts to recapture villages’ under the ‘pretext’ of resettling the homeless.

“We are deeply concerned over the latest happenings in Nandigram. We fear the unilateral action being taken by the CPI(M) and the administration for ‘recapturing’ the villages in the name of ensuring the return of those earlier rendered homeless will adversely affect the process of establishing peace there,” Mr. Ghosh told newspersons here.

He felt that the decisions taken at the recent Front meeting on the procedure to be followed for restoring peace were not being adhered to. “The situation is fast deteriorating. And as a result, not only the affected area, the entire State is heading towards chaos,” he said.

Appeal

Calling upon the administration and the State Left Front to take effective measures, Mr. Ghosh appealed to Mr. Basu, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee and Left Front chairman Biman Bose to take the initiative for an all-party peace meeting now.

“We appeal to Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee and the entire Opposition to participate in the meeting and seek out a solution,” he said after an emergency meeting of the party’s state secretariat.

Earlier, RSP leader and PWD Minister Kshiti Goswami asked for his party’s permission to resign from the ministry over the ‘continuing violence.’ — PTI
