Welcome development

The political situation in Karnataka has taken a u-turn with President’s Rule being revoked. The only fallout of the political drama was a 40-day loss of governance for the people. However, they can take solace from the fact that a general election, squandering huge sums of public money, was avoided at least for the time being. Governor Rameshwar Thakur deserves to be commended for his impartial report.

After all the frustration it faced, the BJP-JD(S) coalition got a Diwali gift on Thursday when the Centre decided to revoke President’s Rule in Karnataka. For the BJP, the next two years will be an acid test for it will have to put its saffron agenda on the backburner and work for the common good of the people.

The BJP is on cloud nine with the Karnataka Governor inviting it to form a government. But how long the new government will remain in power, given the differences between the BJP and the JD(S), is anybody’s guess.

The BJP, in its haste to open its account in the south, has embraced the politics of expedience and opportunism. Its stock would have risen had it opted for re-election to the State Assembly. Short-term political gains will cost the party heavily in future.

Mr. Thakur’s recommendation and his act of inviting the BJP to form a government are laudable. All that the people want is good governance. It is hoped that the BJP-led government will discharge its functions to fulfil the expectations of the common man and complete its term successfully.

The political stalemate in Karnataka has ended on a positive note paving the way for the installation of the first-ever BJP-led government in the south. But the days ahead are not going to be easy for the BJP. The people expect good governance and if the coalition fails, they will not forgive the leaders.
