Turmoil in Pakistan

The people of India and Pakistan have always got along well with one another. It is the priorities of those in power in both countries that have resulted in conflicts and mutual distrust. Democracy in Pakistan has not taken firm root as the military has derailed the process of ushering in a vibrant democratic system.

But in the last few years, the forces of democracy have gained in strength and courage in Pakistan. It is becoming increasingly difficult for the army to put down their democratic aspirations. The Pakistani media, lawyers and the judiciary too have shown tremendous strength of character and courage. We in India should wish them all success in their democratic endeavour. And we should learn to distinguish between the people, who deserve our salute, and the government of Pakistan.

The U.S. and the U.K. are unwittingly leading Pakistan to instability. Their blind support to Gen. Musharraf is disastrous for the people of Pakistan and the international community. The general is using the Emergency to silence the moderate voices in society to remain in power. The west should force him to give up the uniform and hold free and fair elections under a caretaker government and independent Election Commission. Otherwise the unrest will lead to a state of civil war.

The U.S. and the U.K. will be to blame for any regional or international crisis triggered by the situation in Pakistan.
