Handcuffed burglar ‘stumps’ policemen

Escapes from police station, as constables are engrossed in watching cricket match

HYDERABAD: A man wanted in burglary cases, G. Kishan, escaped during daytime on Sunday from Uppal police station while the constables were reportedly watching the cricket match between India and Pakistan on television.

The accused somehow managed to remove the handcuff and quietly walked out of the police station around 12.30 p.m. “We learnt the constables Sriramulu and Buggaiah went to watch the TV in the barrack of the police station. The incident is being inquired into,” Malkajgiri ACP P. Ranga Rao told The Hindu.

Action likely

Action would be initiated against the constables and sentry concerned if they were found guilty, he added.

Kishan was wanted by the Rajasthan police in connection with some burglaries committed in Jodhpur. A special party led by Sub-Inspector Manish Dev nabbed him at his rented house in Bharatnagar of Ramanthapur on Saturday night with the help of the Uppal police.

Kishan allegedly attacked the police party with a sword resulting in injuries to Mr. Dev and two local policemen. But he was overpowered and arrested later. The Uppal police registered a case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 332 (attacking public servant to deter him from discharging duties) of the Indian Penal Code and shifted him to the police station.

Transit warrant

The Rajasthan police were supposed to take him to Rajasthan on prisoner’s transit warrant after producing him in the local court here. Kishan was handcuffed and made to sit outside the lock-up. The chain of the handcuff was tied to the lock-up bars.

“Somehow, he managed to take out the handcuff and since the constables keeping tab on him were not around, he managed to escape,” the ACP explained.
