Yeddyurappa to be sworn in today

B. S. Satish Kumar

BANGALORE: Bharatiya Janata Party leader B.S. Yeddyurappa will be sworn in the 19th Chief Minister of Karnataka at 12:10 p.m. on Monday. None from the Janata Dal (Secular) will take oath along with him.

Governor Rameshwar Thakur will administer the oath of office and secrecy.

The JD(S) was expected to finalise its nominee for the post of deputy chief minister, who was scheduled to be sworn in along with Mr. Yeddyurappa. It, however, changed its mind after a meeting of its legislature party. It was presided over by the party’s national president, H.D. Deve Gowda.

BJP list

According to earlier plans, the BJP wanted only Mr. Yeddyurappa to take oath on Monday in addition to the JD(S) nominee.

However, with the JD(S) seeking to have an independent swearing-in ceremony, the BJP has decided to finalise a list of MLAs (around five), who will be sworn in along with Mr. Yeddyurappa.

This list will be finalised after a word with Mr. Gowda on the JD(S) stand.

Mr. Yeddyurappa is expected to call on Mr. Gowda to invite him for the swearing-in ceremony.

Vote of confidence

PTI adds:

Mr. Yeddyurappa will prove his majority on the floor of the State Assembly on November 15.

An indication to this affect was available from BJP ally JD(S) spokesperson Y. S. V. Datta when he said that his party ministers would join the Government only after Mr. Yeddyurappa wins the vote of confidence on November 15.

“All 18 JD(S) ministers, including Deputy Chief Minister, would take the oath at one go on a good day after the Government wins vote of confidence on November 15”, Mr. Datta said on Sunday night.
