NEW DELHI: Mandeep Singh’s 34th minute strike helped Government Model Senior Secondary School, Ladowali, Jalandhar, defeat Birsa Munda Vidyapitha, Rourkela, Orissa, 1-0 and move into the semifinals of the 36th ONGC-Nehru Junior boys hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday.

The Jalandhar school needed a simple win to make it through from the Group III super league and Mandeep provided just that.

Also moving in to the semifinals were Guru Harkrishan Public School, Shahdara, Delhi, and Sat Guru Partap Singh Academy, Sri Bhaini Sahib, Ludhiana.

The Shahdara school edged past Government Senior Secondary School, Gurgaon, 3-2 after the two teams were tied 1-1 at the halftime. Hasan Raza scored the opening goal for the Delhi team in the 23rd minute before Naresh (30th) struck equaliser.

On changing the ends, Guru Harkrishan Public School scored in a space of three minutes through Suman Minz (45th) and Mohammed Shafique (48th) to establish a handy lead.

Vikas Siwach’s 67th minute strike came little too late for the Gurgaon school.

In the third match of the day, the Ludhiana school defeated Army Boys Sports Company, Bangalore, 3-0 with Manpreet Singh (33rd), Basant Singh (66th) and Navdeep Singh (70th) being the scorers.
