Child rights

The article, ‘Needed, a code of child rights’ (Nov. 14) by V.R. Krishna Iyer is a forceful protest against the wilful negation of the values of socialism enshrined in the preamble to the Constitution by the government in power, Parliament and the political leadership of India. With liberalisation and globalisation the corner stone of our economic system, the objective of socialism has been totally abandoned. Justice Iyer’s article has thrown up a challenge to our political leadership.

The author’s lament that our leaders have scant respect for the Indian child is true in every sense. The girl child is the worst sufferer. A comprehensive code of child rights is a desideratum.

Throughout the 60 years of Independence, the problem of children has not been properly addressed. From the heavy burdens they are forced to carry to school to the prohibition of employment of child labour, everything is on paper. Children face many problems but neither the parents nor their teachers nor the politicians look to tackling the problems in the proper perspective.
