NEW DELHI: Shweta Chandra Rana started on the wrong foot, but recovered very well to win a double crown in the Good Earth AITA Super Series junior tennis tournament at the DLTA Complex here on Friday. Shweta, with a stout heart and a strong will to fight it out, beat Vaniya Dangwal in both the finals, albeit in contrasting style. In the under-14 final, Shweta dropped the first set, but lost only three more games in winning the next two sets and the crown. Later, she was equally authoritative despite erring with her attacking shots to win in straight sets against an opponent who had distinctly lost confidence in her abilities. The other player to feature in both the finals in the boys’ section, Digvijay Singh, was not that efficient in handling his two matches. The player from Himachal Pradesh lost the under-14 final to Ronit Bisht in three sets after winning the first set, but he did not lose heart as he beat Samip Mehta of Gujarat in straight sets later in the day. The results (all finals): Boys: U-16: Digivijay Singh bt Samip Mehta 6-3, 6-3; U-14: Ronit Bisht bt Digvijay Singh 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Girls: U-16: Shweta Rana bt Vaniya Dangwal 6-3, 6-4; U-14: Shweta Rana bt Vaniya Dangwal 3-6, 6-2, 6-1. — Special Correspondent © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
