Tendulkar, Harbhajan hold the key: Bevan

HYDERABAD: The former Australian one-day specialist Michael Bevan strongly believes that the talent identification programme and the winning attitude separate Australians from the rest.

“We always believe that it is the dedicated and committed talent hunt schemes across Australia which enable us to produce a strong line of gifted cricketers. Exactly for this reason, I think even when some of the big names like Adam Gilchrist, Ricky Pointing leave the scene, Australia still should be good enough to dominate world cricket,” he said in a chat with The Hindu, here. Bevan is coaching Chennai in the Indian Cricket League.

Questioned what would be his advice to the Indians who would be touring down under next month, Bevan said all depends on how quickly they feel comfortable on the bouncy tracks in Australia.

“Once again, the key to India’s success will be Sachin Tendulkar. And then there is Harbhajan Singh who has always done well against us,” he said.

On ICL, Bevan said that since his retirement from cricket, he had been longing to become a coach and it was a quick decision to join once the offer was made.

“I am not sure whether I can treat it as a stepping stone to aspire to be the Australian coach. This is an exciting offer and I believe this will be the new order in cricket world,” he concluded. — Principal Correspondent
