Sixes factfile

(sixes, name, country, matches)

1. 100 Adam Gilchrist (Aus) 92; 2. 88 Brian Lara (WI) 131; 3. 87 Chris Cairns (NZ) 62; 4. 84 Viv Richards (WI) 121; 5. 79 Matthew Hayden (Aus) 91.

HOBART: Adam Gilchrist became the first batsman to notch up 100 sixes in Test cricket when he slogged a Muttiah Muralitharan ball out of the Bellerive Oval on Saturday in the second Test against Sri Lanka.

The 36-year-old Australian vice-captain hit consecutive sixes against Muralitharan over mid-wicket, the second clearing a perimeter fence and rolling down an adjacent road.

Gilchrist’s 67 on Saturday contained three sixes in all, and seven boundaries. It was his 130th innings — but first in 10 months — in 92 Test matches.

West Indian Brian Lara hit 88 sixes in his Test career to be second on the list of big hitters. New Zealander Chris Cairns finished with 87 and another West Indies great, Viv Richards, had 84. — AP
