Cases registered against those damaging property

Thanjavur: Six of the nine accused have been arrested in connection with Saturday’s murder of Poondi K. Kalaichelvam, Tiruvarur district secretary of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) at Koradachery in Tiruvarur district, said I. Raja, Inspector-General of Police, Central Zone, here on Sunday.

The arrested are Kakkuveeran and Krishnakumar of Madurai, Selvam of Koradachery, Kalaivanan of Mayiladuthurai, Saravanan from Tiruvallur district and Senthil from Sirkazhi. Communication by Superintendent of Police, Tiruvarur district, to the highways patrolling police made it possible to nab the accused, who tried to escape in a car.

The car was intercepted at the Vilamal check-post. Senthil and Krishnakumar jumped out of the car and tried to escape. But Sub-Inspectors Rajendran and Chales chased and nabbed them. Kakkuveeran and Selvam were injured in the blast when they hurled a bomb at the residence of Poondi Kalaichelvam. They were admitted in Thanjavur Medical College Hospital, Mr. Raja told reporters here.

A gang of nine had come to the house of Kalaichelvam. Four police teams were formed to nab three other accused.

When pointed out by presspersons that the police remained silent spectators at places where DMK workers damaged public property and set ablaze buses and shops, he said that cases had been registered against those who damaged public property. Adequate police force had been posted, he said.
