Congress keeps everybody guessing

NEW DELHI: The Congress on Tuesday kept everybody guessing on whether it will do business with the Janata Dal (Secular) in Karnataka after the first-ever BJP-led coalition government in the south collapsed.

“All these things are hypothetical. We reserve the right to deal with the situation as it arises,” Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi told journalists here.

On whether the Congress was changing its earlier call for “fresh elections,” Mr. Singhvi said, “We have nothing to say except to watch, comment and criticise the farce being enacted by the principal actors in Karnataka.”

Terming the situation the “zenith of immorality,” he said, “This is a unique case of an unholy alliance, in which the divorce has taken place before the marriage and dreams have shattered before the honeymoon has taken place.”

The alliance between the BJP and the JD(S) was “nothing but fickle and unstable.” More serious than misgovernance was the question of the “loot” of the State and the “raw lust for power.”

Mr. Singhvi said this was the true face of the BJP, the consequences of which would reverberate in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh.

According to the spokesman, there was a lesson for the people of Karnataka — this was the result they should expect if they supported such parties.
