Steps taken to prevent disease

Cattle vaccinated in Nagapattinam

NAGAPATTINAM: The Animal Husbandry department in Nagapattinam district has taken steps to prevent foot and mouth disease (called ‘Komaari’ in Tamil) on the cattle following the death of nearly half a dozen cattle in Sirkazhi area recently.

According to Tenkasi S. Jawahar, Collector, on Tuesday, special camps were being conducted by Animal Husbandry department in several parts of the district.

Vaccinations against foot and mouth disease were being administered to the cattle.

He said that the district had received 78,000 doses of vaccines of which 58,000 vaccinations had so far been administered to the cattle through veterinary dispensaries and special camps.

Under control, says Collector

The Collector pointed out that the foot and mouth disease had been brought under control and the farmers and people in the rural areas need not panic.

“Alert doctors”

They could bring to the notice of the doctors in the veterinary dispensaries if any milch animal or calf was found affected by the disease.
