VISAKHAPATNAM: N.S. Chalam, 72, who played for Andhra in the Ranji Trophy cricket championship, died in Hyderabad on Wednesday due to a prolonged illness. He is survived by wife, a son and two daughters. A medium-pacer, Chalam shared the new ball with his captain Rana Pratap Gupta in the match against the then Mysore in Mysore in 1962, when the eight-ball over was in vogue. He worked for the Visakhapatnam Port Trust and was a member of its team and later manger of the team in the all-India Major Ports tournaments. He played for Metro CC and was responsible for many of major successes of the club and the port teams. Incidentally, the Andhra-Goa Ranji match at the Port Stadium here in December 1993 was his benefit match and was the first major tie at the venue. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
