TIRUPUR: Upgrading of Tirupur Municipality into a Corporation has raised people’s hopes that other departments too - the police and the revenue – will get a much-needed fillip. The proposed Corporation will have more than five lakh population with 120 sq. km. area under its jurisdiction with three municipalities and eight village panchayats. Tirupur legislator C. Govindasamy has requested the Chief Minister to set up a police commissionerate for Tirupur considering the rapid growth of the city and its suburbs. Mr. Govindasamy felt the present set-up was hardly adequate to cope with the growth of the town. At present a deputy superintendent of police heads the Tirupur sub-division which covers five law and order police stations – Tirupur north, Tirupur south, Tirupur rural, Anupparpalayam, and Mangalam besides an all-women police station and two traffic wings. “The present strength of less than 250 police personnel is not adequate. More policemen are required to regulate traffic, prevent crimes and maintain law and order. We have been appealing to the Government to increase the police strength and appoint senior officials,” said Tirupur Exporters’ Association president A. Sakthivel. Seconds Collar Shirts Manufacturers Association president K.S. Babuji said higher cadre officials should be appointed to head the Tirupur police.
