‘Protest by Left against retail majors a farce’

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: Convener of the United Democratic Front P.P. Thankachan has said that the law and order situation in the State is deteriorating to alarming levels under the Left Democratic Front rule. Talking to press persons here on Friday, he said that the UDF was convening a meeting at the Cantonment House to discuss the plight of the State in the wake of the dismal law and order situation. Mr. Thankachan alleged that the LDF had unfurled a policy to create rift among different communities in the State and derive political capital out of it.

Row over release

The Ministers who barged into a police station at Thiruvananthapuram and forcefully released those arrested under criminal charges must be dropped from the Cabinet. The Ministers had not only committed a crime but also violated the oath of office,” Mr. Thankachan said. He wanted Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan to make his stand clear on the issue. Mr. Thankachan said that the agitation launched by the Left against the outlets of retail majors was a farce. The very people who gave permits for these outlets are organising agitations against them, he said.

He alleged that the CPI(M) was trying to include Marxism in the school syllabus. “The attempt is part of a larger agenda to spread communism among children,” he said.

Earlier, Mr. Thankachan inaugurated a 24-hour fast by INTUC leader V. Sathyaseelan at the Press Club Maidan. The fast is to press the government for meeting the demands of cashew workers.
