Kolkata: The Army was withdrawn from Kolkata on Friday, two days after it was called in following violence in some areas. All the four companies that were deployed have been withdrawn after normality returned to the central parts of the city, Home Secretary Prasad Ranjan Ray said. The Army patrolled the streets in the affected areas and staged flag marches in the past two days after violence erupted on Wednesday. The disturbances occurred after supporters of the All India Minority Forum (AIMF) — who were demanding that the visa of controversial Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen be cancelled — turned violent. The West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee has decided to suspend AIMF leader Idris Ali from the party’s primary membership. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
