Desilting of canals proposed

CUDDALORE: It has been proposed to take up desilting of irrigation canals under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme to avoid delay, Collector Rajendra Ratnoo has said.

He was responding to a request made in this regard by Kothattai Arumugham of the Tamil Nadu Land Owners’ Association at a farmers’ grievance day meeting held here on Friday.

Mr. Arumugham said that citing financial constraints, the Public Works Department was going slow on the works.

The department could take care of the main canals and entrust works on the sub-canals to local bodies and farmers’ associations, he suggested.
