Manpreet Kaur sets a new mark

VIJAYAWADA: Punjab’s Manpreet Kaur created a new meet record in the girls’ u-20 shot put event, hurling the iron ball to a distance of 13.83 metres, in the Reliance 23rd junior National athletic championship at the Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium here on Saturday. She eclipsed the 12.99 metre mark set at Bangalore in November 2006 by Haryana’s Aplesh.

The day witnessed a series of superlative performances by Kerala athletes as they went on to win 10 gold, eight silver and four bronze medals.

Kerala’s Mayookha Johny took the honours in the u-20 girls’ long jump with a 6.04 metres effort to equal Jetty Joseph’s record set at Cuttack in 1999.
