Over 780 persons detained

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: As many as 785 persons, including 103 anti-social elements and 125 persons wanted in connection with various cases in different police stations, were picked up in the city on Saturday night.

Night patrolling

The action comes in the wake of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi’s directive to intensify night patrolling and have a check on the movement of anti-social elements. Following this, the police formed more teams involving small groups, which included head constables and sub-inspectors. A total of 437 beats were formed across the city.

Deploying personnel from the respective police stations in the ‘storming operation’ helped in swift identification of the wanted persons, a senior police officer said.

Cases registered

Traffic police supervising important stretches such as Kamarajar Salai, Anna Salai Poonamallee High Road, Vadapalani 100 feet Road, East Coast Road and near the Kathipara junction, registered about 1,500 cases against two-wheeler riders for not wearing helmet and 75 cases of drunk driving and rash and negligent driving.

Commissioner of Police G. Nanchil Kumaran and other senior officers went around the city as part of the storming operation, an officer said.
