Akhil Krishnan rewrites record

VIJAYAWADA: Kerala hurdler Akhil Krishnan emerged as the star performer of day three of the Reliance 23rd junior National athletic championship at the IGMC stadium here on Monday, as he overhauled the record set by Punjab’s Satinder Singh in the 110m hurdles in December 2004, with his timing of 14.38 seconds. Saba Bhagat of Maharashtra, who finished second, equalled the meet record.

It was Sahanara Khautan all the way in the 2,000m final for the u-16 girls as she won the event in a comfortable manner. Khautan stayed in the lead right from the first lap and despite a brilliant surge by Maharasthra’s Pooja Varede near the finishing post, she managed to win comfortably. The 4x100 metres relay for u-18 boys saw the Andhra Pradesh quartet take the coveted first place clocking 43.07 seconds.

Kerala is leading the medals tally with 27 gold, 18 silver and 10 bronze medals with Tamil Nadu and Haryana in the second and third positions respectively.
