Thrissur in title clash

THALASSERY: Thrissur dethroned defending champion Thiruvananthapuram and will meet SAI, Kollam in the final of the 53rd State men’s senior hockey tournament.

In the semifinals at the Municipal stadium on Tuesday, Thrissur beat Thiruvananthapuram 5-4 in sudden death. Both teams were level 1-1 at end of regular time.

Sajil put Thrissur ahead in the 6th minute while former junior international, G.L. Praveen Kumar restored parity for Thiruvananthapuram by converting a penalty stroke in the 45th minute. However, Thrissur won 5-4 in sudden death.

Last year’s runner-up SAI, Kollam got the better of Kollam by a solitary goal. Shamshuddin scored the match-winner in the 30th minute. In an exhibition match, Thalassery Veterans defeated G.V. Sports school girls 4-1.
