Contempt notice to Biman Bose, two others

Special Correspondent

KOLKATA: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday issued criminal contempt notices to three senior leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), including the party’s State Secretary, Biman Bose, for their comments on an earlier ruling stating that the March 14 police firing in Nandigram was unconstitutional.

CPI(M) central committee members Shyamal Chakravarty and Benoy Konar were also issued notices.

The notices were issued by a Division Bench of the High Court comprising Chief Justice S.S. Nijjar and Justice P.C. Ghose following an application seeking contempt proceedings against the three leaders, filed by the Bar Library Club and the Calcutta High Court Bar Association.

At a public meeting in the city on November 17, the three leaders had allegedly spoken against the High Court order of the previous day that had rejected the State government’s arguments justifying the police firing in Nandigram.
