MADURAI: The PWD has proposed to introduce turn system of irrigation for the single crop area in Madurai, Dindigul and Sivaganga districts from Saturday. Water release through the Periyar Main Canal and Tirumangalam Main Canal will be stopped for four days from Saturday and released for five days thereafter. The regulation had been planned taking into account the decreasing storage in the Periyar dam, the Executive Engineer, Periyar-Vaigai Basin Circle, V. Srinivasagam, said. However, the daily release for the second crop of the double crop area would continue. “Harvesting of first crop is getting over and land preparation work is under way for the past 15 days. Hence, farmers will continue to get water,” an official said. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
