LOST AND FOUND: Swapna and husband Mahender produced before the media in Hyderabad on Friday. HYDERABAD: The week-long controversy over the alleged abduction of a woman, Swapna in Sanathnagar came to a close on Friday, when Cyberabad police declared that she had indeed run away from home and married her friend Mahendar. Presenting the newly-wed couple before media persons, Cyberabad Commissioner S. Prabhakar Reddy said Swapna’s parents were aware of their daughter’s love affair but chose not to disclose it. They had also reprimanded Mahender, a JCB machine operator, prompting him to vacate the rented room in Banjaranagar. Mr. Reddy said no decision was taken to register a case against them for misleading the police. “We’re yet to ascertain why they didn’t reveal the facts,” he remarked. Replying to queries, Mahender said he fell in love with Swapna six months ago. Both of them decided to get married but were apprehensive of opposition from Swapna’s parents. On November 23, he went to her house with three of his friends in an autorickshaw and picked her up. They went to Mahatma Gandhi bus station and took a bus to Bangalore and stayed at his relative’s house. Three days later, they married in a temple in Kudumkunta village. The police traced the couple on Thursday and brought them to city on Friday. “I am not scared of my parents. We fell in love and got married,” an unfazed Swapna said. The 19-year-old woman’s disappearance a week ago created sensation as her parents apprehended that she could have been kidnapped by an autorickshaw driver whom she had slapped earlier. Her family members allegedly detained several three-wheelers moving in the area and also attacked some drivers. As subsequent reports indicated that Swapna was not kidnapped, some enraged auto-drivers tried to attack their house. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
