New sewage plant planned

TIRUCHI: Tiruchi Corporation has planned to set up a modern sewage treatment plant on the lines of those at Panjim (Goa) and Navi Mumbai.

The move follows a recent visit by a delegation of elected representatives and officials of the Corporation to Panjim, Pune and Navi Mumbai to study the functioning of the sewage treatment plants there.

Impressed by the technology model adopted at Panjim and Navi Mumbai, the officials have decided to replicate it here.

The treatment plant, which adopts what is referred to as C-Tech technology model, is functional at Panjim and the one at Navi Mumbai is to be commissioned soon.

Both are being set up by the technology provided by SFC Environmental Technologies Private Limited, a joint venture of SFCU, Austria, a global water and waste water company.

“We will soon draw up a proposal and forward it to the government for approval. We have planned to seek financial assistance for the project under the Urban Infrastructure Scheme for Small and Medium Towns,” T.T. Balsamy, Corporation Commissioner, told The Hindu.

The proposed plant, with a capacity to treat about 130 to 140 million litres a day (MLD), is to be located at the existing Panchapur sewage treatment farm located on the outskirts of the city on the Tiruchi-Madurai highway. The investment for the project could be around Rs.70 crore.
