KANCHEEPURAM: Labour Welfare Minister T. M. Anbarasan called on the Mambakkam residents, who were lodged in the Madurantakam Municipal Community Hall after their village was inundated on Wednesday evening.

Enquiries reveal that several areas in Mambakkam, Mocheri Little Colony and Gandhi Nagar were flooded with surplus water that overflowed from the Mambakkam lake near Madurantakam at around 3 p.m.

Immediately, the people were evacuated by a team of officials led by Municipal Chairman Malarvizhi Kumar and lodged in the Municipal Community Hall.

Surplus water from the Madurantakam tank was released into the Kallar river from Wednesday morning, sources said.

Kolapakkam inundated

Meanwhile, several low-lying areas in Kolapakkam village were flooded with rainwater. All affected people were evicted and lodged at a private college near Madurantakam.

Madurantakam panchayat union chairman Sasirekha Sridhar and officials accompanied the Minister, who distributed relief measures to the affected people.

Holidays from Thursday

Educational institutions in Tiruvallur district will remain closed on December 20 in view of the incessant rain, according to Collector, Rajendrakumar.

The Collector, in a release, said that schools in the district had been directed to conduct half-yearly examinations slated for December 19 and 20 after Christmas holidays, on January 3, 2008 and January 4 respectively.

Meanwhile, enquiries reveal that local holiday has been declared for the schools in Kancheepuram district also.

The schools have been directed to conduct half-yearly examinations scheduled for December 20 later.

Woman dies in wall collapse

Ravakannu (54) of Chinnapoondi succumbed to injuries sustained in a wall collapse owing to heavy rain on Wednesday.

According to police, the victim was cooking at around 4-30 p.m. on Tuesday when a portion of the mud wall in her house collapsed. She was rushed to the Chengalpattu Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to injuries at around 7-30 a.m. on Wednesday.
