KOLKATA: Fire personnel had to visit the Howrah Bridge twice to bring down a man who had clambered up its beams on Friday afternoon. The person, stated to be of unsound mind, went up the bridge and perched himself there. Firemen used “extension ladders” to reach him and he was rescued after an operation lasting nearly 45 minutes. On being brought down he was taken to the Golabari police station. He was released after a short while, only to climb up a pier at the other end of the bridge a few hours later. A big crowd gathered and the man gesticulated wildly at them from his precariously located niche above. Traffic along the bridge was thrown into disarray. © Copyright 2000 - 2009 The Hindu |
