Police officer, 5 others hurt in ULFA ambush

Sibsagar: Six persons, including a sub-divisional police officer and three policemen, were injured as the banned ULFA ambushed a police patrol in upper Assam’s Sibsagar district on Tuesday.

Four police personnel, including SDPO Charaideo Jayanta Sarathi Bora, and two civilians were injured when a box-like object, lying near a bridge in Khona Tea Estate area, went off, police said.

The injured were admitted to Assam Medical College Hospital in Dibrugarh.

There had been intelligence inputs about ULFA strikes in upper Assam districts of Sibsagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, targeting securitymen in the run-up to the panchayat polls beginning on December 31.

Police suspect the ambush was a retaliation to the recent killing of Anirban Basu, hardcore ULFA activist, belonging to the elite strike force ‘28 battalion’. — PTI
